Rusizi - Bwegera: cut off from the world

In the Rusizi plain, on the border with Burundi and Rwanda. This is a very impoverished region with little water and scarce rainfall. Any form of agriculture is extremely difficult.

The area has been torn apart by war and ravaged by various armies and rebel groups leading to many deaths, orphans and refugees with no chance of survival.
The Bwegera centre, which today welcomes children that live in the rural settlement and the surrounding area, was created to provide educational opportunities in this region.

In 1999 we began supporting the primary school. The building was a wreck but the teaching staff was excellent.

In 2008/2009, after the many vicissitudes of the guerrilla warfare, Mabawa managed to build a new schoolhouse with 7 classrooms, providing space for 300 children and their 6 teachers.

On that same large 10,000m2 plot, donated by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where we built the first school, the Government has, in 2014, built a new school, which will probably be devoted to secondary education.

Until now, the best students had (with a Mabawa study grant) attended a school which was quite far from the village.

The school is entirely funded by Mabawa:
- teachers' salaries;
- teaching materials;
- uniforms;

- building maintenance
