The compound of Bwegera, in the plain of the Rusizi and bordered by Burundi and Rwanda, is one of the most impoverished regions in the area. Water is extremely scarce and rainfall is infrequent - consequently, cultivation of the land is possible only with great effort and difficulty.
This is a region torn by past wars and continual conflicts between opposing bands of rebel soldiers and gangs - resulting in innumerable deaths throughout the years and a current population that includes many orphans and refugees facing a constant struggle for survival.
Today, as a consequence, there exist hundreds of children who live in settlements throughout the countryside and surrounding areas. Currently 200 of this children are able to participate in our program.
The families of these children are impoverished and illiterate, making the opportunity for education more valuable and necessary than ever.
Constructed during the years of 2008 and 2009, the new school facility offers 7 classrooms and 6 instructors. The immediate surroundings include a large piece of land donated by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A short distance away exists a small middle school that we hope to provide assistance to in the years ahead.
Mabawa provides the salary of the instructors as well as the funds for all teaching materials.
