Bukavu
Since 1998, Mabawa has supported the ASSECO (Association
for the Safeguard of Congolese Children) in this still civil-war-torn
area. The region of Bukavu has seen widespread conflict since the
First Congo War (1996-1997) and The
Second Congo War (1998-2002). The latter involved 9 African
countries and more than 20 armed groups. Some still roam the
region unwilling to disarm while killing and pillaging.
The conflict has seen more than 3.8 Million dead and millions
displaced.
In the last 8 years Mabawa has been able to provide for the ASSECO children. Their numbers have grown from 100 in 1998 to 650 in 2006. These children, often orphans and displaced by the on-going guerilla war, are taken in by families as is the custom in the region. Mabawa concentrates its efforts on the children’s schooling, basic healthcare and welfare and the needed underlying infrastructure: the acquisition of land and consequent construction of classrooms, refectory and kitchen facilities.
